The entire leadership of Kwa Saadala, a sprawling village along the Arusha-Moshi highway, has been suspended over alleged embezzlement of  public funds and illegal sale of village assets.

The order was given over the weekend by the Hai District Commissioner, Mr Novatus Makunga, who said a probe team would be formed to investigate allegations that a public land meant for social and community services, such as schools, has been sold to individuals.Accused village leaders have been directed to step aside, as the probe into the scam gets underway.

Those suspended include the Village chairman, Mr Ernest Munisi, Village Executive officer, Mr Claire Ramadhani and Masama South Ward Executive officer. A six-member team comprising officials from Moshi District Council, including the Land officer, Legal officer, Internal auditor, Personnel officer, Administrative officer and Supplies officer, will investiage the scam and has been given one week to complete the task.

Mr Makunga said that once the team completes its task, a meeting would be convened for all village stakeholders to discuss the findings of the report and what should be done to those proved guilty and have cases to answer.

At last weekend's meeting, most residents alleged that the village chairman was behind the sale of the public land. One of them, Ms Judica Swai, claimed that open spaces close to the Msamadi Primary School had also been sold  without the school management and villagers’ consent.
